Kooij sprints to seventh place in chaotic finale of opening stage Renewi Tour

# Kooij Claims Seventh in Tumultuous Finale of Renewi Tour Opener

The Renewi Tour kicked off in Terneuzen with an intense display of cycling as riders targeted an aggressive pace right from the start. With 100 kilometers left in the stage, the peloton splintered into echelons, leading to a breakaway of sixteen riders before Team Visma | Lease a Bike took charge of the chase.

The final lap saw the breakaway reeled in by the peloton, setting the stage for a chaotic sprint finish. Unfortunately, the excitement turned to tension when Olav Kooij and Dan McLay were involved in a crash with just four kilometers to go. Despite the setback, Kooij, aided by Christophe Laporte’s impressive efforts, managed to rejoin the sprint and finished in seventh place.

Reflecting on the race, Kooij stated, “Luckily, I feel good, and the goal remains to win a stage in the coming days.” He continued, noting the challenges he faced after the crash: “The damage is fortunately not too bad. I was able to continue quickly, but of course I had already wasted quite a bit of energy to come back, which made my chances much smaller today.”

Team sports director Marc Reef echoed Kooij’s sentiments, recognizing the silver lining despite the crash. “The team rode well together today. It’s a pity that Olav couldn’t do his best sprint because of the crash, but otherwise it looked excellent. Unfortunately, Dan came off worse in the crash and did not make it to the finish.”

In the end, Tim Merlier of Soudal Quick-Step took top honors, finishing with a time of 3:40:05, followed by Arnaud De Lie of Lotto and Juan Sebastián Molano of UAE Team Emirates – XRG. Kooij’s performance places him in a strong position for the upcoming stages as he aims for a victory.
