With the new cycling season underway, Lotto Soudal has brought in several new riders, including five young talents from their U23 team. One of these promising riders is 21-year-old Maxim Van Gils, who is excited to embark on his professional cycling career.
In a recent interview, Van Gils expressed his pride in making the step up from the U23 team to the WorldTeam, along with his teammates Xandres Vervloesem and Harry Sweeny. He credited the Development project for helping him progress and called it a “dream come true.”
Cycling has been a lifelong passion for Van Gils, thanks in part to his father’s influence. Starting with his first race at the age of eight, Van Gils has steadily progressed and is now thrilled to be a professional cyclist. He also mentioned his younger brother’s enthusiasm for cycling and how they often enjoy rides together.
Known for his affinity for mountains, Van Gils has already made a mark in climbing races for U23 riders. His love for the high mountains and ability to maintain a steady pace for long periods make him an exciting prospect for the future. He also mentioned his desire to excel in races like the Ardennes Classics and his strategy of waiting for the right moment to showcase his skills.
While Van Gils acknowledges his lack of experience in time trialing, he understands its importance in stage races and plans to focus on improving in that discipline. He is eager to test himself against the best in the pro category and is determined to give his all in every race.
This season marks a new chapter in Van Gils’ cycling career, filled with learning opportunities and the desire to push his limits. As a member of Lotto Soudal’s WorldTeam, he aims to make a name for himself and prove his potential as a rising star in the sport.
