Max Poole Shines in Fourth Place Finish on Challenging Stage

Max Poole of Team dsm-firmenich displayed a remarkable performance on Thursday’s stage, securing a fantastic fourth place finish atop La Cruz de Linares. Poole’s goal was to join the breakaway and contend for the stage win, and he executed his strategy brilliantly over the demanding terrain.

The peloton sensed that Thursday’s stage would favor the breakaway after the GC riders battled for stage glory on Angliru the day before. As a result, the race started with an aggressive pace, with numerous attacks from the bunch. After 20 kilometers, Poole formed a group that managed to distance themselves from the pack. Despite initial attempts to keep the break in check, they soon gained enough time to firmly establish themselves as contenders for the stage win.

The stage, characterized by its undulating route, proved to be demanding as the breakaway charged towards the final climbs. On the penultimate ascent, Remco Evenepoel launched a decisive move that ultimately secured him the victory. Poole, displaying immense determination, held onto Evenepoel’s wheel as the last rider in pursuit.

Navigating the descent and the flat valley road, Poole found himself accompanying Damiano Caruso as they approached the final climb together. Showing incredible strength and pushing himself to the limit on the steep slopes, Poole fought all the way to the finish line in La Cruz de Linares, achieving an impressive fourth place on the stage.

After the race, Poole shared his thoughts, stating, “I tried to go with Remco when he went on the climb, which was a positive and nice to try and hang with him, but that maybe pushed me a bit into the red. The strongest rider on the day won. I gave it everything in the end but just had nothing in the last kilometers. It was a bit disappointing to get rolled for the podium in the finale, but I gave it my everything so can’t have too many regrets.”

Reflecting on his performance, Poole remained optimistic, saying, “I had a tricky first week and a bit, but this week I’m feeling better so far, so I think that’s a positive. We also expected that as a team coming in as I normally get better as a race goes on, so it’s nice to be able to race in the final week. Hopefully, we can try again in the days left.”

Max Poole’s impressive fourth-place finish serves as a testament to his tenacity and skill as a cyclist. As the race continues, Team dsm-firmenich will undoubtedly look to build upon this success and aim for more notable achievements in the remaining stages.
