Matej Mohorič Impresses with Third Place Finish at Puy de Dôme

Slovenian rider Matej Mohorič showcased his skills by finishing third in stage 9 of the Tour de France, adding to his team’s impressive podium finishes this year. Mohorič was part of a breakaway group that included 14 riders, and with no significant threat to the general classification, the peloton allowed the break to take a substantial lead of over 14 minutes.

As the race approached the Puy de Dôme, Mohorič made a determined push to catch the leader, reducing the deficit significantly. However, it was Canadian cyclist Woods who emerged from the second chasing group to claim the stage win. Mohorič managed to catch his teammate Jorgensen but had to settle for third place behind Latour from Total Energies.

Mohorič shared his thoughts on the race, saying, “Today was not actually a stage that I planned to go for my own result, but I found myself in the breakaway from the start. First, I hesitated to wait and see if any of our climbers would make it across, but the barrage was made behind and we had a gap. Then I gave it my best and tried to go for the win, but when Jorgensen attacked, I hesitated too much. Then it was always going to be hard to come back, and in the last climb, Woods and Latour even made it across to us and had something left to go and win the stage, so I think Michael proved he was the strongest today.”

Despite missing out on the stage win, Mohorič expressed confidence in his form, saying, “I think the shape is really good, so I’m looking forward to the stages that are more suited for me.”

The Tour de France continues, and with Mohorič performing strongly, he will be one to watch in the upcoming stages.
