Matej Mohorič Continues His Winning Streak as he Takes the Queen Stage in Croatia
Slovenian cyclist Matej Mohorič has once again proven himself to be one of the best in the sport as he claimed victory in the Queen Stage at the 2023 Cro Race. This victory marks an incredible achievement for Mohorič, as he has now won in each of his last five multi-day races. With wins in Slovenia, France, Poland, Belgium, and now Croatia, 2023 has become his most successful season yet.
In the intense final climb to the finish line in Labin, Mohorič showcased his exceptional sprinting abilities and crossed the line just ahead of Magnus Sheffield. Reflecting on his win, Mohorič commented, “On a climb like that, it’s really important to commit fully and give everything all the way to the line, and that’s what I did.”
Mohorič also revealed a secret weapon that contributed to his success. He had been training on the Croatian roads for nine days prior to the race and had ridden the final climb multiple times. He said, “I have just been here on vacation. I was training on these roads every day, and I rode this climb twice a day for nine days, so I knew it pretty well!”
Despite a crash on the opening stage that put him at a significant disadvantage, Mohorič and his team remained motivated throughout the race. Sports Director Michal Golaš praised the team’s performance, stating, “The guys did a very good job today… We rode conservatively before Fran brought the boys to the last 2k in a good position. Nicolò rode brilliantly in the last 500 to set the high tempo, and of course, then there is Matej… His timing was perfect and his legs super strong.”
With his successful season coming to an end, Mohorič expressed relief and excitement for some well-deserved rest. He said, “It’s been a long long summer for me without a proper chance to rest up. I have the gravel World Championships in ten days and then I’m definitely looking forward to some well-deserved time off!”
The Cro Race 2023 will conclude on Sunday with another opportunity for the sprinters in the 189km stage from Crikvenica to Ozalj.
