Matej Mohorič Claims Victory as 2023 UCI Gravel World Champion
Matej Mohorič of Slovenia has emerged as the winner of the 2023 UCI Gravel World Championship in Italy. Mohorič showcased his prowess on the technical 169km route, leaving behind Belgian rider Florian Vermeersch and ultimately clinching the championship title. Despite facing a mechanical issue with only 14km to go, Mohorič managed to widen the gap between him and Vermeersch, crowning himself as the victor.
Reflecting on his achievement, Mohorič expressed his pride and enjoyment of the race. He acknowledged the challenging nature of the course, stating, “It hurt my legs, but I was happy; my mind was super happy.” He also commended his fellow competitors, Florian and Connor, for their strength throughout the race. However, Mohorič attributed his success to leveraging his weight advantage on the climbs.
In an incident just before the finish line, Mohorič crashed but quickly recovered and crossed the finish line solo. Despite the mishap, he remained calm, knowing he had a small gap. Mohorič’s strategic approach paid off, and he thoroughly savored the moment, stating, “I always believed in it from the very start.”
The 2023 UCI Gravel World Championship showcased not only Mohorič’s exceptional skills but also the stunning landscape and challenging terrain of Italy. Congratulations to Matej Mohorič on his remarkable victory as the 2023 UCI Gravel World Champion.
