Maryland Native Scott McGill Returns Home to Compete in the Maryland Cycling Classic

Professional cyclist Scott McGill, a native of Fallston, Maryland, is set to race in the second annual Maryland Cycling Classic presented by UnitedHealthcare. McGill, who recently made the jump to Europe to race full-time, is excited to return home and compete in front of his family and friends.

Speaking about his experience racing in the inaugural Maryland Cycling Classic last season, McGill said, “It was cool to race on my home roads, and in front of my family and friends. A lot of people that I hadn’t talked to in the last couple of years reached out and were able to see the race.”

McGill had a successful 2022 season, including stage victories at the Walmart Joe Martin Stage Race and the Armed Forces Cycling Classic. He also had a strong performance at the Volta a Portugal, earning two stage victories and the points jersey.

Despite his success in Portugal, McGill missed reaching the time limit to contest the finish at the Maryland Cycling Classic. However, he went on to participate in an impressive 227km breakaway at the World Championships in Australia later that year.

Since then, McGill has made the move to Europe and joined the Human Powered Health Cycling team. However, he faced a series of injuries and setbacks that sidelined him for the first half of this year.

Now recovered and back to racing, McGill is eager to compete in the Maryland Cycling Classic and help his team improve on their second-place finish from last season. He believes the challenging course could lead to a variety of race outcomes.

“The upper part is super nice, but because the finish has to be in Baltimore, it makes it harder to have a more challenging finishing circuit. A lot of the climbs come at the beginning of the race. Last year, it ended up breaking the race up which surprised a lot of people. Maybe this year people will be expecting that, so it may go the other way and end with a big field sprint. We’ll have to wait and see,” McGill said.

The Maryland Cycling Classic presented by UnitedHealthcare is set to take place on September 3, 2023, in Baltimore, Maryland. The race features top international pro cyclists from over 20 countries and is part of a four-day weekend celebration of health and wellness.
