MARTINEZ THIRD ON LA MOLINA IN FIRST GC TEST
# Lenny Martinez Claims Third Place in High-Stakes Stage at Volta a Catalunya
Lenny Martinez delivered an impressive performance, securing a spot on the podium by finishing third in Stage 5 of the Volta a Catalunya. The stage, stretching 153.1 kilometers from La Seu d’Urgell to La Molina, presented a significant challenge as it featured over 4,000 meters of climbing, culminating in a long ascent that tested the riders’ endurance.
Conditions on the mountain were far from ideal, with strong winds leading race organizers to alter the finish line in the final stretch. Early in the race, a breakaway group injected energy into the event, but as the competitors approached the final climb, the race dynamic shifted dramatically. The pace intensified, resulting in a reduced group of contenders for the stage win.
Jonas Vingegaard (VISMA) showcased his climbing prowess with a decisive solo move, leaving behind Felix Gall (DECATHLON) to take the stage victory. Martinez, although struggling earlier, found his rhythm during the climb, and with a disciplined effort, he managed to secure third place.
In light of this result, Martinez has climbed into third position overall in the general classification and has also taken the lead in the young rider classification as the race progresses.
Reflecting on the challenging stage, Martinez commented: “Yeah, it was a tough stage. I didn’t feel particularly great during the middle of the day, but my legs started to come back later on. We managed to get a bit of a gap at the start of the climb with Felix Gall and Florian Lipowitz. Once Vingegaard bridged across, I tried to hold his wheel, but the pace was just too high. In the end, third place is not so bad.”
As the 105th edition of the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya continues, all eyes are on Martinez and his teammates as they prepare for the next stages of this grueling competition.
