# Pello Bilbao Takes Center Stage for Bahrain Victorious at GP Indurain and Itzulia Basque Country
Pello Bilbao is set to lead the Bahrain Victorious team on familiar terrain as they prepare for an intense week of racing at the GP Indurain and Itzulia Basque Country. Both events hold special significance for the Basque rider, who will be competing before his local fans.
Kicking off on April 4, the GP Indurain, now in its 35th edition, presents a challenging 205-kilometre course with a total elevation gain of 3,714 metres. Starting and finishing in Estella-Lizarra, the route is renowned for its rigorous profile, which often sees decisive action in the final 60 kilometres. The first major challenge, the category 1 Alto de Guirguillano, is expected to catalyze an aggressive finale, allowing the strongest riders to emerge.
Bilbao will be joined by teammate Jakob Omrzel in this race, as they both aim to capitalize on a course that aligns with their strengths. The team’s lineup remains consistent across both events, with Rainer Kepplinger replacing Omrzel for Itzulia Basque Country.
On April 6, the focus will shift to the six-stage Itzulia Basque Country, now celebrating its 65th edition. This year’s race comprises 810.1 kilometres and a daunting 16,404 metres of elevation, commencing with a 13.9km individual time trial. Each stage presents unique challenges, but stage 5—considered the queen stage—will be particularly pivotal, featuring 4,079 metres of elevation and three category 1 climbs.
Bilbao, bringing both experience and a deep understanding of the local terrain, is determined to achieve a podium finish in what he describes as possibly the “most important races of the calendar on an emotional level.” He expressed his anticipation: “Racing at home is always something special… nothing compares to competing where cycling means so much to the people.”
At 36 years old, Bilbao acknowledges that this race means more to him than ever, as much of the route is within 80 kilometres of his home. “I know these roads by heart, almost with my eyes closed,” he said, emphasizing the difficulty of this year’s parcours. “This is one of the hardest editions of Itzulia I’ve raced.”
Focusing on the overall classification, he stated, “Even at 36, I still believe I can fight for [the podium]. I will give everything to achieve that.” He also highlighted the importance of delivering memorable performances for his Basque fans.
Bahrain Victorious Sports Director Gorazd Štangelj echoed the team’s ambitions for both races. “For GP Indurain, we have Pello and Jakob, and we are looking for a strong result. We know they are both capable and we hope to fight for a top five,” he remarked. Looking ahead to Itzulia, Štangelj placed confidence in Bilbao’s local knowledge, highlighting his potential to excel in the general classification.
As the anticipation builds for the upcoming races, all eyes will be on Pello Bilbao, who seeks not only personal success but also to inspire his community through his performances at home.
