Vuelta a España: Remco Evenepoel impresses with strong defense
Belgian cyclist Remco Evenepoel showcased his strength and confidence at the Vuelta a España as he defended admirably on the challenging Xorret de Cati climb. Evenepoel’s performance brought him close to his second victory of the race.
Evenepoel, riding for the Soudal Quick-Step team, remained calm and maintained a steady pace on the steep slopes of the climb, preventing his rivals from launching an attack. He continued to lead the group over the top of the climb and even sprinted to secure a runner-up finish, earning six bonus seconds.
After the race, Evenepoel reflected on his performance and a moment of miscommunication that cost him the victory, saying, “I finished second, which is quite a pity, as I really believe I could have won, but the thing is I thought there was still a rider in front. It was a communication problem and it’s frustrating, but it is as it is”.
With his strong showing, Evenepoel moved up to sixth place in the overall standings. The Vuelta a España now heads into its first rest day.
