Caleb Ewan wins the first stage of the Settimana Internazionale Coppi e Bartali 2025
It goes to Ineos Grenadiers’ Australian Caleb Ewan the first stage of the Settimana Internazionale Coppi e Bartali, which was raced today starting in Ferrara and finishing in Bondeno.
The strong Australian sprinter, who in his career has won five stages at the Tour de France, five at the Giro d’Italia, as well as two second places at the Milano – Sanremo, had practically no rivals and in the final sprint was well ahead of Israel’s national champion Oleg Kogut (Israel Premier Tech) and Frenchman Jason Tesson (Team TotalEnergies).
The day’s breakaway kicked off in the early stages of the race and saw five riders in the lead: Baptiste Huyet (Unibet Tietema Rockets), Kevin Pezzo Rosola (General Store – Essegibi – F.lli Curia), Carlos Samudio (Team Solution Tech – Vini Fantini), Matteo Zurlo (S.C. Padovani Polo Cherry Bank) and Dominik Amann (Team Vorarlberg). The peloton lets it go and gives the outriders about a two-minute lead. The race changes pace as they enter the final circuit of Bondeno when the peloton under the pushes of the Ineos Grenadiers and Israel Premier Tech riders picks up the pace to close in on the escapees with 12 km to go, leaving room for the sprinters’ teams to set up the sprint.
In the finale, Ineos-Grenadiers imposes its own pace and orchestrates a perfect launch for Caleb Ewan, who makes the most of his teammates’ work, going on to take his first win of 2025 on the very day of his season debut. Tomorrow, the second stage will be run from Riccione to Sogliano al Rubicone (11:55 a.m. start) with Ewan starting at the top of the general classification, ahead of Kogut by 4″ and Tesson by 6″. The Australian also leads the points classification, while Kevin Pezzo Rosola and Davide Donati will wear the jerseys of best climber and best young rider, respectively. The final stages of the second stage will be streamed live on www.tuttobiciweb.it, starting at 3 p.m., and by Rai Sport from 5:40 p.m.
