Leila Gschwentner: From Ski Slopes to Cycling Success in the Tyrolean Mountains

Leila Gschwentner, a member of the Liv AlUla Jayco Continental Team, has traded in snowy ski slopes for conquering the Tyrolean mountains on her EnviLiv road bike. Despite nearly pursuing a career as a professional skier, cycling ultimately won her heart. Gschwentner reflects on her journey into cycling, stating, “At first, I didn’t want to go, but now I know it was my best decision ever.”

The popularity of women’s cycling in Austria has been on the rise, with Gschwentner acknowledging the sport’s growth, noting, “Cycling is still not the most popular sport here. Skiing and football are number one.” However, she recognizes the advancements made, attributing some of it to increased attention post the world championships in Innsbruck and the success of the reigning Olympic Road champion in women’s cycling.

Being a part of Liv AlUla Jayco Continental Team has fueled Gschwentner’s drive to continually improve herself. The team’s mentorship and support have been pivotal in her development as a cyclist, providing her with the necessary tools to aim for WorldTour races in the future. She acknowledges the importance of not just physical strength but also strategic thinking in competitive cycling.

When not on her bike, Gschwentner enjoys various outdoor activities such as skiing in winter and hiking in the summer. Her time spent in the kitchen allows her to explore her passion for cooking and baking, indulging in creating new recipes and decorating cakes and cookies.

Having faced setbacks, including a collision with a public bus resulting in injuries, Gschwentner has shown resilience in overcoming challenges. She has emphasized the significance of safety in cycling and the importance of mental recovery post-injury.

Looking ahead, Gschwentner aspires to participate in renowned races like the Tour of Flanders and dreams of winning Paris-Roubaix: “The brutality of the race appeals to me. It must be a great feeling when you enter the velodrome as the leader in the race on your way to victory.”
