Laurence Pithie scores another top-5
Laurence Pithie Continues Strong Showing at Tour Down Under with Second Consecutive Top-5 Finish
Laurence Pithie’s performance at the Tour Down Under is gaining attention as he secured a top-5 finish for the second day in a row. The young New Zealander from Groupama-FDJ crossed the line in fifth position in stage four of the tour. The race took the peloton towards Port Elliot, with a relatively flat route and a slight risk of echelons due to the coastal location.
Speaking about the race, Jussi Veikkanen commented on the calm weather conditions, stating, “It was a very calm day weather-wise.” The stage saw Vinicius Rangel and Jackson Medway leading for the majority of the day, with their breakaway ending just twelve kilometers from the finish. Laurence reflected on the stage, noting that the peloton did not have to push excessively due to only two riders being in the lead.
With less than ten kilometers to go, the Groupama-FDJ team made their move, with Clément and Enzo playing crucial roles in positioning the team at the front of the peloton. Despite the intense final twenty kilometers, Laurence was able to stay positioned well in the last two kilometers. However, he stated, “Unfortunately, in the last turn at 600 meters, I was too far back, between 15th and 20th place.”
Jussi Veikkanen expressed some regret about Laurence’s positioning, saying, “We have some regrets because if he was better positioned in the last corner, it could have been even better.” Nonetheless, the team remains focused on building upon Laurence’s performances for the rest of the season. Looking ahead, Jussi highlighted the upcoming opportunities for the team, mentioning, “There will be opportunities for Reuben.”
As the spotlight shifts to the summit finishes at Willunga Hill and Mount Lofty, the team is focusing on setting new goals and seizing future opportunities. Despite the loss of Rudy, the team remains optimistic and is eager to see what the weekend will bring for Laurence and the rest of the team.
