Launching the Portuguese Week with a Bunch Sprint in Volta ao Algarve
The Volta ao Algarve launched its 2023 edition with a first stage leading to a probable bunch sprint to set the stage for the upcoming challenges. The 200-kilometer route from Portimāo to Lagos was characterized by slightly hilly terrain, setting the scene for a possible sprint scenario. According to Frédéric Guesdon, the team had their eye on a potential sprint with Marc Sarreau. The race saw a breakaway led mainly by Portuguese teams, with the peloton ultimately coming back together for a bunch sprint.
Frédéric Guesdon, commenting on the day’s events, said, “It was rather hectic, and it wasn’t easy to organize.” The day was marred by a crash involving Valentin Madouas but the French champion managed to rejoin the peloton after a brief chase. However, the sprint preparation faced challenges in the final kilometers, with Marc Sarreau finishing fourteenth without being able to properly sprint.
Looking ahead, the race director underlined the upcoming challenges, stating, “This is the first test for the overall. Punchers and climbers will try to make the biggest possible gap on the time trialists.” The next stage at the Alto de Foia is expected to provide a steady climb with potential winds, presenting an opportunity for the climbers to make their mark.
This stage holds significance as Valentin Madouas claimed fourth place in the same climb in 2023, promising an exciting showdown in the upcoming stages of Volta ao Algarve.
