Laporte rewards attacking Team Visma | Lease a Bike with podium finish in Wevelgem

# Laporte Shines in Wevelgem as Team Visma | Lease a Bike Claims Podium Finish

The 88th edition of the prestigious In Flanders Fields race kicked off in the coastal town of Middelkerke, setting the stage for a grueling 240-kilometer battle where wind conditions promised to be a significant factor. Team Visma | Lease a Bike was represented by two former champions, Wout van Aert and Christophe Laporte, as they aimed for glory this year.

The race began with an electrifying pace, quickly fragmenting the peloton and creating gaps during the early chase of eight riders. Although Van Aert and Laporte stayed vigilant, Matthew Brennan, who has recently regained his fitness, unfortunately missed the early break.

As the race ventured into its challenging hill zone, centered around the notorious Kemmelberg, Team Visma faced setbacks with the loss of Timo Kielich, who had to abandon the race. The intense climbs saw Van Aert escalate the tempo on the second ascent, quickly linking up with the remaining breakaway contenders, including Van der Poel and Florian Vermeersch.

In a decisive moment under thirty kilometers remaining, Van Aert and Van der Poel launched a two-man attack towards Wevelgem. Although the peloton, which included Laporte, began to close the gap, the duo’s efforts were only fully reeled in within the final kilometer. In a thrilling finish in Wevelgem, Laporte showcased his sprinting strength, clinching third place.

Reflecting on the race, Laporte stated, “We were fully focused on victory as a team today, but I’m satisfied with third place. It looked promising for Wout for a while, but many teams were still well represented in the peloton. When they were caught, I knew I had to go all-in for the sprint. A podium finish is therefore a nice result for me. As a team, we raced an aggressive race: we attacked early and were always at the front. We can look ahead to our next goals with confidence.”

Van Aert, who had played a pivotal role throughout the race, shared his sentiments: “It’s a shame, because for a long time it looked like Mathieu and I would be fighting for the win. I felt good and decided to raise the pace on the second ascent of the Kemmelberg. We crested with a strong group and quickly joined the leaders. During the final ascent, I was able to respond to Mathieu’s attack. We worked well together all the way to Wevelgem, but through the radio I heard that our lead was shrinking. We kept believing in it, but in the end we just came up short. I can build on this performance, although unfortunately a top result didn’t materialize.”

### Race Results
1. Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Premier Tech) – 05:08:03
2. Tobias Lund Andresen (Decathlon CMA CGM Team)
3. Christophe Laporte (Team Visma | Lease a Bike)

Despite some setbacks, Team Visma | Lease a Bike’s aggressive strategy paid off with a commendable podium finish. They now look forward to future races with renewed confidence and ambition.
