Kooij opens Tour of Britain with brilliant double
# Kooij Kicks Off Tour of Britain with Spectacular Double Victory
In an electrifying start to the Lloyds Bank Tour of Britain, Olav Kooij of Team Visma | Lease a Bike showcased his exceptional talent, clinching victory in the opening stage of the six-stage event. “I’m happy to start this stage race straight away with a win,” Kooij expressed after crossing the finish line. “Given my results here in 2023, I already had warm feelings about this race, and they’ve only grown stronger now.”
With a roster that blends seasoned pros and promising young riders, Team Visma | Lease a Bike aimed to seize stage victories on British soil, a goal they successfully launched with Kooij’s win. The Dutch sprinter demonstrated remarkable patience in the closing meters, edging out his competitors just as the finish line approached, marking his eighth victory of the season and boosting his team’s impressive total to 33 wins.
Reflecting on his pivotal moment, Kooij noted, “There was a lot of wind in the final and the road also kicked uphill. We knew we had to be well positioned going into the last corner. After that it was all about patience. My teammates did a really good job. In the last few hundred metres I managed to find the right wheel. With the strong headwind it wasn’t easy, but luckily I had the legs to finish it off.”
At just 23 years old, Kooij emphasized a strategic outlook for the race ahead: “We’ll take it day by day. With Matthew we also have another rider with a strong finish. Our goal is to win stages. Today we’ve already made a very good start.”
