Kooij falls just short of victory in first regular stage of Tour of Holland
# Kooij Just Misses Victory in Tour of Holland Stage One Sprint
In a highly anticipated stage featuring only 118 kilometers, the first regular stage of the Tour of Holland culminated in a dramatic sprint finish. Although a breakaway of four riders captured attention during the day, the sprint teams maintained control, ensuring the gap never widened significantly.
As the finale unfolded, Christophe Laporte, adorned in the red jersey following a commendable effort on the opening day, played a pivotal role for his teammate, Olav Kooij. Laporte expertly guided Kooij through the challenging closing sections, setting him up perfectly for the sprint. Kooij surged forward, appearing poised for victory, but rival Tim Merlier had other intentions.
Reflecting on the intense competition post-race, Kooij stated, “We can’t blame ourselves for anything today. We did everything right in the finale. I was in a great position and knew I’d be close to the win. Tim came closer and closer and eventually drew level. In the final metres he just had that extra bit of speed to edge past me.” Acknowledging the team’s effort, he added, “The stage win was absolutely the priority for me and the team today. After tomorrow’s time trial, we’ll see where we stand in the overall.”
