Julian Alaphilippe Makes Strong Showing at Japan Cup Despite Challenging Conditions
Soudal Quick-Step put on an offensive display at the Japan Cup, with Julian Alaphilippe leading the charge.
The Japan Cup proved to be a challenging race due to both the demanding circuit and the heavy rain that plagued the event. However, this did not deter Julian Alaphilippe from launching an early attack. Alaphilippe, the double World Champion, made his first appearance in Japan since turning pro and showcased his strength as he won two of the day’s KOM prizes and built a significant lead.
Alaphilippe’s lead was maintained until he was caught by a select group of riders, including his teammates James Knox, Fausto Masnada, and Ilan Van Wilder, with 60 kilometers remaining. Despite being reeled in, Alaphilippe continued to play an active role in the race, supporting Masnada in the finale.
In the end, it was Masnada who performed admirably in the rain-soaked race, finishing as the highest-ranked Soudal Quick-Step rider in 14th place. The race was won by Rui Costa of Intermarche-Circus-Wanty.
Overall, Soudal Quick-Step displayed a strong performance at the Japan Cup, with Alaphilippe’s early attack setting the tone for an exciting and challenging race.
