Jorgenson just misses out on victory at Faun Drôme Classic
# Jorgenson Falls Just Short in Thrilling Faun Drôme Classic
In a gripping showdown at the Faun Drôme Classic, Matteo Jorgenson narrowly missed victory in a fierce sprint finish, securing second place in the grueling 185-mile race held in France. With the start and finish both located in Étoile-sur-Rhône, the riders faced a demanding and hilly course that tested their endurance and tactical prowess.
Following the race’s commencement, a breakaway group of seven riders surged ahead of the peloton, where Team Visma | Lease a Bike maintained a strong position. After tackling the initial climbs of the day, the focus shifted to the decisive finale. As the peloton regrouped and caught the breakaway, Ben Tulett executed a bold attack, joined by teammates Mattias Skjelmose and Lenny Martinez.
The leading group soon expanded to eight riders, featuring Jorgenson alongside the robust Davide Piganzoli. With climbs occurring rapidly, attacks came thick and fast. After Piganzoli’s attempt was neutralized, Jorgenson’s collaborative effort with Grégoire turned out to be pivotal. Despite a strong start to his season with a fourth-place finish in the preceding Faun-Ardèche Classic, Jorgenson ultimately found himself bested by Grégoire in a heated two-man sprint. Notably, Tulett was involved in a crash towards the race’s conclusion.
Reflecting on his performance, Jorgenson stated, “Second place is obviously not what I came for, but today I was beaten by a better sprinter. Tactically, we rode a strong race as a team. At one point, we had four riders in the lead group in the finale. That numerical advantage allowed me to accelerate at the right moment, but unfortunately, I just missed out on the win. I’m happy with my form and the feeling in my first two races of the season. It’s great to be on the podium right away. I’m looking forward to the upcoming Italian races on my schedule.”
Team Visma’s sports director, Frans Maassen, praised the team’s aggressive strategy, saying, “We wanted to race more aggressively than we did yesterday at the Faun-Ardèche Classic. In the final hour, we aimed to raise the pace with Matteo, Ben, and Davide, and we executed that well. Ben opened things up with a strong acceleration, and shortly afterward, all three of them were in the front group. In the end, Matteo and Grégoire managed to stay clear, but Grégoire was just a bit stronger today. As a team, we rode an excellent race and showed ourselves at our best. We’ll take that with us.”
