Georgia Baker Comes Close to Debut Women’s WorldTour Win on Tour of Chongming Island Stage One
Australian cyclist Georgia Baker put on an impressive performance, narrowly missing out on a victory in her debut Women’s WorldTour race. Baker secured a second-place finish on stage one of the Tour of Chongming Island.
Baker’s team, Jayco AlUla, strategically made their move late in the race, propelling Baker to the front of the pack in the final two kilometers. With her teammates leading the way, Baker positioned herself smartly on their wheels.
Teammate Nina Kessler played a crucial role in guiding Baker through the final corner, setting her up for a sprint to the finish line. Although Baker made a strong initial move, she began to fade as the peloton closed in on her with speed.
Reflecting on her team’s performance, Baker expressed her satisfaction with the well-executed plan. She said, “The lead out was so good! We had a plan…and we were so close to pulling it off.” Despite falling short this time, Baker remains optimistic about the upcoming stages and opportunities for a victory.
With two more stages and two more sprint opportunities to come, Baker and her team will be looking to secure a win in the remaining days of the Tour of Chongming Island.
The stage one results of the 2023 Tour of Chongming Island saw Mylène de Zoete claim first place, with Georgia Baker taking second place. Daria Pikulik finished in third. In the overall general classification, Mylène de Zoete holds the lead, followed by Nina Kessler of Team Jayco AlUla.
