Jill Paterson, an experienced cyclist, is preparing for the upcoming 2023 USA Cycling Gran Fondo National Championships. Paterson is no stranger to Gran Fondo races and has an impressive track record of wins at various levels. She describes the appeal of Gran Fondo races, highlighting the timed segments and the strategy involved. Paterson appreciates the camaraderie and diversity of participants in these races, which cater to athletes of all abilities and ages.
Paterson’s journey in cycling started about a decade ago when she lived in Japan. She began competing in local races and eventually joined a Japanese team. After moving back to the US, she discovered Gran Fondo races, which immediately captured her interest. Her first Gran Fondo race was the series in Frederick, Md., in 2018, which she won. She then went on to achieve remarkable results in the GFNY series, earning a second-place finish at the GFNY World Championship in 2018 and a first-place finish in 2019. Paterson’s most recent victories include the 2022 Gran Fondo National Series Asheville National Championship and the 2022 USA Cycling Gran Fondo National Championship.
With her extensive experience in Gran Fondo races, Paterson has honed her training and racing strategies. She studies the courses in advance and tailors her training to prepare for the specific terrain of each race. While she trains both solo and in groups, Paterson emphasizes the importance of group rides for learning valuable skills and tactics. As a coach herself, she has built up her coaching business alongside her racing career, becoming a reputable USAC Level 2 Coach and USAC Power Certified.
Heading into the 2023 Gran Fondo National Championships, Paterson has set her sights on securing another victory. With multiple wins in the past at the Frederick race, she is familiar with the course and enjoys a homefield advantage. Paterson believes that her knowledge of the course and the support of friendly faces will be advantageous during the race. She plans to stay focused on her racing mindset, make the most of her training, and fine-tune her strategy. While winning is her ultimate goal, Paterson acknowledges that a successful race will also be one in which she gives her best effort and feels proud of her performance.
The 2023 Gran Fondo National Championships will be held on September 17 in Frederick, Md. Paterson is excited for the opportunity to compete for a national title and looks forward to the challenges and rewards that await her on race day.
