Israel’s First Tour de France Cyclist, Guy Niv, Retires

Guy Niv, the first Israeli cyclist to race in the Tour de France, has announced his retirement from professional cycling. Niv, 28, made history in 2020 when he became the first Israeli rider to participate in the prestigious race. However, after reflecting on his career, Niv realized that he no longer had the drive and motivation necessary to reach his full potential in the sport. In a statement, Niv said, “It was the toughest decision I have ever made, but the flame inside that has burned since I started racing has gone out.”

Niv’s decision to retire came as a surprise to many, but he revealed that it had been on his mind for some time. Despite recently finishing his second Tour de France with his best performance yet, Niv explained, “Something turned off inside me during the 2022 season. I did not enjoy it as I used to.” He acknowledged that he hadn’t reached his full potential but believed it was time to move on to a new chapter in his life.

Guy Niv’s retirement was met with sadness from his team, Israel – Premier Tech. Team founder and co-owner Ron Baron expressed his regret, saying, “Guy is the rider who realized the goal and dream we set on achieving when we started this project back in 2014… We truly regret that he is leaving but respect his decision.” Team principal owner Sylvan Adams also accepted Niv’s decision, highlighting his achievements and thanking him for his contributions to the team.

Niv’s career may have been relatively short, but it was eventful and marked a significant milestone for Israeli cycling. Starting as a mountain biker, Niv transitioned to road cycling and quickly made a name for himself. He completed the Giro d’Italia in 2019 and went on to race in and successfully finish five Grand Tours, the most by any Israeli rider. Niv’s determination and dedication to the sport have inspired a new generation of Israeli cyclists.

Although Niv is retiring as a professional cyclist, his impact on the sport and his role as a role model in Israel will endure. IPT manager Kjell Carlstrom expressed confidence in Niv’s ability to guide aspiring cyclists, saying, “He definitely inspired young Israelis to cycle with the goal to become professionals. I’m sure that this will continue, and Guy will be of much help guiding any aspiring cyclist with advice about how to conduct themselves professionally.”

As Niv closes this chapter of his life, he expressed gratitude to the Israel – Premier Tech team, calling it “an unforgettable journey.” Niv thanked the team for enabling him to dream big and achieve great heights together.
