Ion Izagirre Shows Great Form on Brutal Tour de France Stage 15
On the first Pyrenees stage of the Tour de France, Basque rider Ion Izagirre demonstrated exceptional strength and determination to secure yet another impressive result. He finished in fourth place, missing the podium by just centimeters after a grueling 191-kilometer race.
The stage featured the highest peak of this year’s edition, the Port d’Envalira at 2408 meters. From the start, Izagirre was among the attacking riders and eventually joined a large breakaway group of 30 riders. This breakaway, consisting of many strong climbers, built a significant lead of over eight minutes on the peloton as they headed towards the Pyrenees in Andorra.
On the penultimate climb of the day, Izagirre showcased his climbing abilities and maintained a strong pace. He stayed with one of the chasing groups near the soloist at the front and finished just behind the podium contenders. His teammate Alexey Lutsenko also put in a solid performance to defend his position in the overall rankings.
In the final climb before the descent to the finish line in Andorra la Vella, Izagirre battled for position with former World Champion Alejandro Valverde. However, it was Sepp Kuss who ultimately took the stage win. Izagirre crossed the line in fourth place in the sprint from the chasing group.
Reflecting on his performance, Izagirre said, “We knew today’s stage would be a hard and long day… We decided that I would go in the breakaway… I tried to give my best, but I couldn’t do more in the end and took fourth place. I am still happy with my place and performance.”
With this result, Izagirre’s teammate Lutsenko moved up to seventh place in the overall rankings. As the Tour de France enters its final week, the team will continue to strive for a stage win.
Stage 15 of the Tour de France saw Sepp Kuss of Jumbo-Visma take the stage win, followed by Alejandro Valverde of Team Movistar and Wout Poels of Bahrain-Victorious.
