Interview with Emanuel Buchmann: Reflections on the UAE Tour and Future Goals

After a challenging race at the UAE Tour, German national road champion, Emanuel Buchmann, shares his insights on his performance and future aspirations. Reflecting on his experience, Buchmann answered a series of questions about the race and upcoming plans.

1. Regarding the final stage, was it your plan to be in the breakaway?
“It was my plan to make it into the breakaway today. I had already lost some time earlier on the first mountain stage, where I didn’t feel so good, and so I thought they would let me go. So I saw my chance today.”

2. Do you think you could win Jebel Hafeet if you stayed with the peloton/GC group?
“With the form that I have at the moment, I wouldn’t have had a realistic chance of winning from the GC group. So knowing that, the only chance was really to try to take a win from the leading group.”

3. Comparing this year’s race to last year’s Jebel Hafeet climb, how did you feel?
“I actually felt somewhat better last year. But I must say that I gained a lot of confidence from my performance today on Jebel Hafeet, so it’s a silver lining to the race for me.”

4. How do you assess Ben’s performance at UAE compared to last year?
“Ben also put in a solid performance this year. I think he may have been a bit better last year. This year’s edition of the race is not completely satisfying, but when you give it your all and the legs simply have nothing more, there’s not anything else you can do.”

5. Did you have similar GC ambitions like last year at UAE Tour?
“The goal was to take a top ten in the GC again this year. Unfortunately, my form wasn’t super as we discovered earlier on. However, the season is still long and there is more time left to get into the right form.”

6. How do you cope with the heat during races in warm climates?
“I really quite like the heat. I don’t have many problems adapting to the weather. Actually, cold weather is more of a problem for me, so I really do like racing here in the heat.”

7. Considering the team’s performance, how was the atmosphere within the team?
“Despite the fact that we didn’t reach all of our goals here, the morale in the team has still been good. Every day, the guys worked well together towards both our sprint and GC ambitions.”

8. What are your goals for the upcoming races this season?
“Next, I’ll head to a training camp and then the Basque Country. I’m particularly looking forward to the Giro this year, where I hope to be in excellent form. It will be a highlight of the season for me for sure.”

As Emanuel Buchmann reflects on his performance at the UAE Tour and sets his sights on future races, his determination and focus are evident as he looks ahead to the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead in the cycling season.
