Giro d’Italia: Domenico Pozzovivo Reflects on His 17th Grand Tour and the Promise of Young Talent
Italian cyclist Domenico Pozzovivo, now 40 years old, is set to embark on his 17th Giro d’Italia, making him the oldest rider in the peloton. Reflecting on his long career and never-give-up attitude, Pozzovivo expressed gratitude for the opportunity to continue racing after a serious accident in 2019. Despite his age, Pozzovivo remains a crowd favorite in Italy, as demonstrated by the warm reception he received at the team presentation in Pescara.
On the other end of the spectrum is 21-year-old American Matthew Riccitello, the youngest rider in the race. Riccitello, who has had an impressive neo-pro debut, expressed excitement and nerves ahead of his first Grand Tour. Pozzovivo, who sees a younger version of himself in Riccitello, aims to support and guide the young talent throughout the race.
Pozzovivo also noted the changing landscape of professional cycling, with more young riders making an impact at a high level. Despite the age difference within their team, Pozzovivo believes that the mix of experience and youth will lead to a successful race for the team.
