# Tim Wellens Withdraws from Belgian Championships and Tour de France Due to Health Issues
Tim Wellens, the Lotto Soudal rider, has announced his withdrawal from both the Belgian championships, scheduled for this Sunday in Waregem, and the upcoming Tour de France. The decision comes after weeks of health challenges that have hindered his ability to perform at the required intensity.
In an emotional statement, Wellens expressed his struggles, saying, *“At the moment, my body isn’t reacting to the training stimulus the way I want it to. I can’t push the amount of watts I need to do well at the Tour de France.”* His determination to avoid risking his health is evident as he prepares to undergo further examinations in Belgium. *“Together with the team, I decided not to take any risks for the rest of the season. To start at the Tour could jeopardize a lot,”* he added.
Team doctor Steven Bex reassured fans, explaining, *“Blood analysis has shown that there are no anomalies. Tim has also tested negative for Covid.”* He emphasized the need for comprehensive assessments, hoping for clearer insights into Wellens’ condition.
Lotto Soudal’s General Manager, John Lelangue, echoed the sentiments of caution, stating, *“It is a wise decision not to start. At the Tour, there is no time to wait and see. Besides, the season is not over yet for Tim. Just look at what he achieved at the Vuelta last year.”* He highlighted the importance of Wellens returning to peak form.
Concluding on a hopeful note, Wellens expressed his plans for recovery, saying, *“Now, I am going to have a good period of rest so I can find the good feeling again.”* While he admitted disappointment about missing the prestigious race, he remains optimistic, stating, *“there are indeed still a lot of nice races to come after the Tour. And that is where my focus will be. I sincerely wish my teammates all the best. I will be cheering for Lotto Soudal, from home in Monaco.”*
As Wellens takes the necessary time to recuperate, fans and teammates await his return to the competitive cycling scene.
