# Robin Orins Opens Up on Mental Health Struggles This World Mental Health Day
On October 10th, World Mental Health Day, professional cyclist Robin Orins shares his inspiring journey of overcoming significant mental health challenges. After marking his transition to the professional circuit with Lotto Cycling Team, 2024 was expected to be a breakthrough year for Robin. He achieved remarkable feats, including winning the U23 Omloop Het Nieuwsblad and becoming the Belgian time trial champion. However, post-World Championships, Robin faced a tumultuous battle.
In a candid blog post, he reflected, “The lights just went out. Physically and mentally, I was completely empty. While others were celebrating their off-season, I was having panic attacks and crying for hours, trying to find myself again. I was scared, even of myself.”
Recognizing the severity of his situation, Robin sought help from mental health professionals. He slowly began his journey to recovery, stating, “I took medication, and suddenly everything hit me ten times harder… But once I had one positive experience, I realized I could still feel something good. The more often it happened, the better I started to feel.”
By July, Robin returned to competitive cycling at the Tour de Wallonie, demonstrating resilience and growth. As he prepares to participate in Il Lombardia, known as the classic of the falling leaves, his story serves as a beacon of hope.
Robin emphasizes the importance of sharing his experience, noting, “I was in my final year as a U23 rider; it was the year of ‘having to’. That pressure came from myself, not from others… But today, I know that talking about it helps. And I hope that anyone going through a tough time can see, through my story, that they’re not alone.”
The Lotto Cycling Team encourages everyone to watch Robin’s full story through a video shared on their [Instagram page](https://www.instagram.com/p/DPn-c4HjFF5/).
As Robin continues to ride, he serves as a testament to the power of vulnerability and the strength that comes from facing one’s fears.
