From Milan to Bergamo: The Evolution of Il Lombardia

For nearly six decades, Milan held the honor of hosting both the start and finish of Il Lombardia, one of cycling’s most prestigious races. However, in 1995, the torch was passed to Bergamo, a city in the Lombardy region of Italy. The decision changed the race dynamics and formed a special bond between Bergamo and Il Lombardia.

Bergamo joined forces with Varese in 1995, with Bergamo hosting the arrivals and Varese the departures for the next seven years. The passionate support of the local fans and the charm of the Orobic city quickly won over the cycling community, leading to a long-lasting partnership.

The first-ever finish in Bergamo took place in 1995, with Gianni Faresin emerging as the surprise winner. This was followed by notable victories from Andrea Tafi, Laurent Jalabert, Oscar Camenzind, Mirko Celestino, Raimondas Rumšas, Danilo Di Luca, and Michele Bartoli in subsequent years.

After a brief return to Como for the grand finale, Bergamo once again became a regular host in 2014. The city showcased its beauty as Irishman Daniel Martin triumphed with a decisive strike in the heart of Bergamo. In 2016, Esteban Chaves claimed victory, adding to the city’s reputation as a memorable race location.

Since 2012, both Como and Bergamo have become integral parts of Il Lombardia, taking turns in hosting departures and arrivals. This unique arrangement has provided variety and excitement for both the riders and spectators.

In 2021, the last chapter in Bergamo was written by the talented Tadej Pogačar, who secured a clear victory ahead of local favorite Fausto Masnada. As the 2023 edition approaches, all eyes are on Pogačar to see if he can continue his dominance in the city that has become synonymous with Il Lombardia.

Bergamo’s love affair with Il Lombardia is a testament to the city’s rich cycling heritage and the warm embrace of its residents. The partnership between Bergamo and the race is set to continue, solidifying the city’s place in the history of this iconic cycling event.
