Evenepoel Shows Resilience in Itzulia Despite Early Crash

Despite facing a setback early on in the Itzulia Basque Country race, Remco Evenepoel displayed resilience and determination in the opening stage.

This year, the opening stage of the Itzulia Basque Country race took place in Irun, featuring a challenging 10km course with technical sections, cobbled streets, and the Olaberria climb. The stage favored specialists against the clock, providing a unique test for the riders.

Evenepoel, who finished fourth overall in his debut at the race last year, encountered a crash in the second corner of Monday’s race. Despite the mishap, the World Champion swiftly recovered and completed the Individual Time Trial (ITT) without any major consequences.

After a strong performance, Evenepoel secured a fourth-place finish, trailing only eleven seconds behind the stage winner, Primoz Roglic.

Reflecting on his race, Evenepoel stated, “Everything went well today, except for the mistake I made 200 meters into the race. It was slippery there, but it was my fault. I was hoping to be ahead of the others, but now I am a bit behind. On the other hand, the gaps are small, I am confident in myself and my team, and the real race starts tomorrow, and with it, quite the battle between the yellow jersey contenders.”

Even with the early setback, Evenepoel’s strong performance signifies his determination and resilience in the face of challenges, setting a positive tone for the upcoming stages of the race.
