De Marchi Rediscovers Form in Giro d’Italia Breakaway

Alessandro De Marchi had a breakthrough performance in stage 10 of the Giro d’Italia, finding his legs in the breakaway and launching a late solo attack. After a challenging start to the season due to illness, De Marchi used the first half of the race to ride into form. He described the stage as the best day of his season so far, where he could “go deep and find my old feelings.”

De Marchi initiated a counter attack to create a significant group at the front of the race. Although a large group didn’t materialize, he found himself in a three-rider move. The group worked well together, building a lead of over six minutes before Alpecin-Fenix and Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert took control of the chase.

Reflecting on the race dynamics, De Marchi said, “We probably could have used the wind more to our advantage…maybe we could have used it better to keep the gap higher.” Despite his efforts, De Marchi was eventually caught after a solo break of 12 kilometers.

While De Marchi battled at the front, his Israel Premier Tech (IPT) teammates supported Giacomo Nizzolo in surviving the challenging climbs. However, Nizzolo was unable to maintain contact with the front group and finished in the second group. Biniam Girmay claimed the stage victory.

De Marchi’s performance is a promising sign of his return to form and sets the stage for further opportunities in the remainder of the Giro d’Italia.
