Danny Van Poppel Earns First Career GC Podium at Deutschland Tour
Danny Van Poppel secures third place overall in a thrilling finale
After five days of intense racing, Danny Van Poppel emerged triumphant at the Deutschland Tour, securing a place on the GC podium for the first time in his career. In a closely contested final bonus sprint, Van Poppel managed to secure third place overall by a fraction of a second.
Van Poppel’s impressive performance in Hamburg last weekend set the stage for his success in the Deutschland Tour. With a fourth-place finish in the prologue and consistent top 10 finishes in the challenging stages, Van Poppel’s sprint in Essen was a close call, narrowly missing out on victory.
Although he may not have claimed a stage win, Van Poppel’s strong performance propelled him to a position just 3 seconds away from the podium. The decisive moment came in the final stage in Bremen, where Van Poppel secured the last bonus sprint and claimed those crucial 3 seconds, securing third place in the Deutschland Tour 2023.
The GC standings for the Deutschland Tour are as follows:
01 I. Van Wilder 17:01:18
02 F. Großschartner +0:11
03 D. Van Poppel +0:13
Reflecting on his achievement, Danny Van Poppel said, “There was some wind today and we tried to make echelons because we have such a strong team here. But it didn’t work out. Then we had full focus on the bonus sprint. I won it and so I took 3rd place in the GC. For me, it’s amazing because it’s my first GC podium result ever. I’m not a climber, so it means a lot to me and BORA – hansgrohe here in Germany. Our big goals for the Deutschland Tour were to win a stage and to be on the GC podium. In the end, we achieved one of these goals and yesterday we almost won the stage. I think it was a successful week for us.”
Danny Van Poppel’s achievement at the Deutschland Tour marks a significant milestone in his career, highlighting his potential as a force to be reckoned with in the world of professional cycling. With his impressive performance and determination, Van Poppel has cemented his place among the elite cyclists, making a name for himself on the international stage.
