Cycling: Simon Clarke narrowly misses Giro d’Italia stage win

A thrilling finish at the Giro d’Italia stage 6 saw former teammates Simon Clarke and Alessandro De Marchi come tantalizingly close to victory. They were caught just 200 meters from the finish line as the peloton sprinted past them, with Pedersen taking the stage win in Napoli.

In a breakaway with three other riders, Clarke and De Marchi managed to drop their companions and maintain a two-minute lead for the final 90 minutes. Despite a 30-second gap with three kilometers to go, they fell short of victory by just a few seconds.

Clarke expressed his disappointment, saying, “I dreamt of this victory for many years now. We needed 10 more seconds and that was it. We put up a good fight but we were just a few hundred meters short.”

Describing the cooperation with De Marchi, Clarke said, “I have to say thanks to him because without him, I wouldn’t even have arrived this close to a stage victory.”

Although devastated by the near miss, Clarke remains motivated and determined, knowing there are still 15 stages to go in the Giro d’Italia. He shared, “Tomorrow is another day. Every year, I work a little harder, and that enables me to perform like today.”

Cycling fans can expect to see Clarke continue his aggressive riding and pursuit of victory in the upcoming stages of the race.
