Crash overshadows Amstel Gold Race for Jorgenson and Team Visma | Lease a Bike

# Jorgenson’s Setback Highlights Team Visma’s Challenges at Amstel Gold Race

In the 60th edition of the Amstel Gold Race, Matteo Jorgenson of Team Visma | Lease a Bike made a much-anticipated return to competitive cycling after the Italian spring races, specifically targeting the Ardennes classics.

The race commenced with a spirited nine-rider breakaway during the opening phase of the 260-kilometer course in Limburg. As the peloton moved toward the local laps in and around Valkenburg, they gradually closed the gap on the leading riders. With about forty kilometers remaining, the race began to open up dramatically.

On the notable Gulperberg climb, Jorgenson responded to an attack from Romain Grégoire. Other favorites, including Remco Evenepoel, Mattias Skjelmose, and Kévin Vauquelin, also remained vigilant. The leading group managed to crest the hill together and continued to push forward.

However, the race took a serious turn for Jorgenson when he was caught in a crash involving Vauquelin. Subsequently, he was transported to the hospital for further examination, leaving Team Visma | Lease a Bike at a disadvantage without their leader. Ultimately, victory went to Evenepoel.

Frans Maassen, the team’s sports director, expressed disappointment at the outcome. “We had high expectations for this race and were well prepared. Everyone could see that Matteo was in great form, so it’s very frustrating that our race ended this way,” he said. He highlighted the team’s effective positioning during the race: “The riders did a great job keeping Matteo in a good position all day. The goal was to be among the first to crest the Gulperberg and the Kruisberg. He looked fresh on those climbs, but unfortunately, he crashed shortly afterward. That’s extremely disappointing.”

### Race Results:
1. **Remco Evenepoel** (Red Bull – BORA – hansgrohe) – 5:59:40

3. **Benoît Cosnefroy** (UAE Team Emirates – XRG) – +00:01:59

### Notable DNF:

As Team Visma | Lease a Bike reflects on the race, the hope remains that Jorgenson will recover swiftly, allowing for future competitions where his potential can once again shine through.
