Corbin Strong Wins Opening Stage of Tour de Luxembourg with Perfect Sprint
The five-day Tour de Luxembourg kicked off with an exciting opening stage that showcased the challenging parcours that awaited the riders. Corbin Strong of Israel-Premier Tech demonstrated his strength and tactical prowess as he claimed victory in a hard-fought sprint to the finish line.
Israel-Premier Tech came into the race with a strong all-round team, aiming for both stage wins and a notable overall result. Strong, a 23-year-old rider from New Zealand, has been showing promising performances throughout the season, including a stage win at the 2022 Tour of Britain and a second-place finish at the recent GP de Québec.
Michael Woods, who had previously triumphed in a stage at this year’s Tour de France, joined the team after a series of races in North America. While Woods acknowledged that his focus for this race is not on the General Classification due to the time trial, he expressed his eagerness to play an aggressive role and use the event as preparation for the upcoming Italian Classics. Woods is also committed to supporting his teammates, particularly Strong, Dylan Teuns, and Jakob Fuglsang, in their pursuit of stage victories.
Throughout the stage, Israel-Premier Tech worked relentlessly to set up Strong for the final sprint. He executed his sprint brilliantly, taking the shortest and quickest route on the curving finish. Søren Kragh Andersen of Alpecin-Deceuninck finished second, while Alex Aranburu of Movistar secured the third-place spot.
With such an impressive start, Corbin Strong has set the tone for the Tour de Luxembourg and has undoubtedly become a rider to watch in the upcoming stages.
