Clément Russo Shines in Volta ao Algarve Stage, Just Misses Top-10

In the recent Volta ao Algarve stage, Clément Russo from Team Groupama-FDJ demonstrated an impressive performance just outside the top-10, despite being a usually designated domestique. The stage was marred by a crash in the last kilometre, splitting the peloton, with Russo making a valiant effort to clinch eleventh place. His feat amid challenging circumstances drew praise from the team management.

The stage in Tavira saw a rather hilly terrain, with a bunch sprint anticipated towards the finish. Despite initial considerations of joining a potential breakaway, the race culminated in a sprint. As the teams of leaders and sprinters jockeyed for position, a crash in the last kilometre disrupted the race, with only Russo managing to navigate through it. Team manager Frédéric Guesdon commented, “Today, we decided to change the roles, with Marc leading Lewis out. Unfortunately, there was a crash in the last kilometre, and they were caught behind. Only Clément, who was the penultimate lead-out man, passed through it.”

Guesdon acknowledged the team’s efforts, emphasizing the high level of competition in sprints, stating, “The day went pretty well, but it’s a shame that we didn’t get a better result because it’s possible to do better.” Despite the challenges, the team remains optimistic for the upcoming time trial, with rider Stefan Küng closely trailing in the general classification, setting sights on a victory in the upcoming stage. Guesdon affirmed, “We will do everything to make sure that he goes for victory like last year, even if the level is even higher this year.”

The stage’s unforeseen events and Russo’s noteworthy performance highlight the intense and unpredictable nature of professional cycling, showcasing the resilience and determination of the riders.
