Christophe Laporte Wins Road European Champion Title in Elite Men’s Category

French cyclist Christophe Laporte has emerged as the victor in the Road European Championships held today in the Elite Men’s category. Laporte secured the top spot by making a solo move in the final ten kilometers, successfully fending off the chasing pack and surpassing competitors Wout Van Aert from Belgium and Olfa Kooij from the Netherlands. The competition took place on the challenging Col du Vam in the Netherlands.

The race began in Assen, and after 25 kilometers, a breakaway group formed, consisting of five riders who held the lead for over 100 kilometers. The group included Joshua Tarling from Great Britain, Stefan Bissegger from Switzerland, Rory Townsend from Ireland, Norman Vahtra from Estonia, and Mathias Vacek from the Czech Republic. Ultimately, Bissegger and Vacek were caught by the peloton.

As the race approached its final stages, the Italian, Belgian, and Dutch teams attempted to create a selection group. This aggressive strategy led to a decisive moment in the race and the emergence of a leading group. The group was comprised of riders Kron and Pedersen from Denmark, De Lie and Van Aert from Belgium, Degenkolb from Germany, Tiller from Norway, Laporte and Dujardin from France, and Kooij and Teunissen from the Netherlands.

In a daring move, Laporte launched an attack with ten kilometers remaining, quickly distancing himself from the pursuing group. He maintained his lead and crossed the finish line, clinching the first European continental title in the Elite category for France.

In addition to the Elite Men’s competition, the Junior Women’s race also took place on the final day of the championships. The race, marked by fierce competition, was won by Fleur Moors from Belgium. Moors, along with Federica Venturelli from Italy, launched an attack on the final climb towards the finish line. Moors ultimately defeated Venturelli, securing first place. Léane Tabu from France finished in third position.

Looking ahead, the next edition of the European Road Championships is set to take place in Belgium’s Limburg-Flanders region from September 11th to 15th, 2024.
