Castroviejo Shines in Breakaway as Thomas Fights Through Adversity at Vuelta a Espana
Jonathan Castroviejo showcased his strength during stage eight at the Vuelta a Espana as Geraint Thomas displayed resilience to minimize his losses following a crash. The stage was dominated by climbs, with Castroviejo joining a second surge of riders to form a sizable 30-rider group at the front of the race.
The efforts of Egan Bernal, who initiated the moves from the peloton after an initial 12-man breakaway, were crucial in assisting Thomas, who endured a painful knee injury on Friday. Despite the setback, the Welshman fought hard and crossed the finish line 3 minutes and 32 seconds behind Bernal.
Castroviejo, however, was among the riders overtaken by the charging general classification (GC) group in the closing stages. The thrilling uphill sprint at the finish saw Primoz Roglic of Jumbo-Visma narrowly clinching victory against Remco Evenepoel of Soudal-Quick-Step. Meanwhile, Roglic’s teammate Sepp Kuss secured seventh place and claimed the red jersey, leading by a margin of 43 seconds. Thomas currently holds the 23rd position overall.
