Blanka Vas takes second place on her return to Cyclocross in Heusden-Zolder:
# Blanka Vas Shines with Second Place Return at Heusden-Zolder Cyclocross
In an impressive comeback to the cyclocross scene, Blanka Vas secured a commendable second place at Heusden-Zolder. Reflecting on her journey, she candidly stated, “My preparation for the cyclocross season wasn’t ideal. After my wedding, I went through a difficult period on a sporting level, with the Koppenbergcross as the low point. That’s when it became clear that my training base wasn’t sufficient.”
After careful deliberation with her team and cyclocross coach, Sanne Cant, Vas made the strategic decision to skip several races to focus on improving her preparation. “Now I’m super happy we made that decision. It’s great that I can finish second right away on my return,” Vas expressed.
The race itself was a fast-paced affair where positioning played a critical role. Vas described the intensity of the competition, saying, “It was intense at times, like the battle for that one corner. Nobody wanted to brake, and it was a normal fight heading into the turn. That was a race incident.” She mentioned how the dynamics shifted during the race, particularly when “Amandine Fouquenet rode away,” leaving her and her competitors on high alert. “I was on my limit too,” she added, noting the crucial moment when “Anniek Van Alphen took over but suddenly stopped pushing.”
Despite these tactical challenges, Vas is determined to leverage this experience as a motivation boost ahead of the next race in Gavere.
Her coach, Sanne Cant, also acknowledged the unique challenges posed by the Heusden-Zolder course, stating, “Heusden-Zolder offered a course that really suited Blanka Vas and Marie Schreiber. However, due to the dry conditions, it became a tactical chess game.” Cant observed that while Vas executed a strong performance, she faced tactical hurdles in the final lap. “The finish is slightly uphill, and the wind was head-on,” he noted, indicating that there might have been collective hesitation among competitors to close the gap on Fouquenet. “If they had rotated as a group of three, everyone would still have had a chance to win.”
Looking ahead, Cant expressed optimism for the future: “This gives us hope for the future. The cyclocross winter will be intense.” He emphasized the positive outlook for Gavere, where the course aligns with Vas’s strengths. “She probably won’t have the best starting position, but if she can prepare mentally for that, she’ll fight her way into the race,” said Cant, setting the stage for what promises to be an exciting continuation of the season for Blanka Vas.
