Santiago Buitrago secured an impressive second place in the Volta Valenciana Queen Stage, showcasing resilience and skill in the face of adversity. Despite the unexpected change, Buitrago and his team managed to adapt, with the athlete extending his lead in the best young rider classification.
The revised stage saw Buitrago and his fellow cyclists face a formidable climb to the summit of El Miserat, with riders initiating a decisive move towards the finish. In a powerful display of skill, Buitrago secured second place, narrowly missing out on the top spot, as Brandon McNulty clinched the victory with a 12-second lead. The podium results reflected the new General Classification, with McNulty leading by 14 seconds over Buitrago and 16 seconds over Vlasov.
Reflecting on the challenging day, Buitrago expressed his condolences, stating, “We are saddened by what happened, and our thoughts are with his family and friends. We tried to give our best under the new race circumstances. The team worked well, and I achieved this good second place. I hope tomorrow we can defend the podium. It’s a very short stage, and anything can happen.”
