Jonathan Milan Takes Second Place in Opening Stage of Tour of Guangxi
Italian cyclist Jonathan Milan showcased his talent during the first stage of the Tour of Guangxi, finishing as the runner-up just behind his compatriot Elia Viviani. Milan’s impressive performance in the race has earned him second place in the general classification and the top spot in the best young rider classification.
Milan expressed his satisfaction with the race, stating, “It was a really nice day I think. We did not have really big pace during the race, and in the end the race was really good and really big. The guys did a really amazing job, bringing me in the crucial position, top 10 in the last corner and we rode perfectly.” Milan admits that he started his sprint a bit early, which ultimately cost him the victory. Reflecting on the race, he shared, “I could have started later, but this was what I could do today.”
Despite narrowly missing out on the win, Milan is grateful for his team’s support and is proud to wear the white jersey as the best young rider. Looking ahead to the next stage, Milan stated, “Tomorrow we will see. It will be another day and we will recover as much as possible. Tomorrow we will do full gas again!”
Gorazd Štangelj, head of sports director, praised Milan’s performance, saying, “Jonathan preferred to start early. He was just a bit too short but at the end of the day okay, we were second, but we understood he has good legs and the team did a great job. We are close and we have plenty of occasions to be better.”
Stage 2 of the Tour of Guangxi will take the riders from Beihai to Qinzhou, covering a distance of 149.6 kilometers with only 619 meters of elevation. This flat route is expected to favor Milan’s sprinting abilities, giving him another opportunity to showcase his talent.
