Bahrain Victorious Hunting Stages at the Tour Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes
# Bahrain Victorious Set to Conquer Challenges at Tour Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes
With the Giro d’Italia recently wrapped up, Bahrain Victorious is gearing up for the Tour Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, the first stage race in preparation for the upcoming Tour de France. The event, formerly known as the Critérium du Dauphiné, takes on a new name honoring the host region while maintaining its traditional competitive spirit.
Now in its 78th edition, the race runs from June 8 to June 15, featuring eight stages that span approximately 1,200 kilometers, beginning in Vizille and culminating at Plateau de Solaison. The course is predominantly mountainous, presenting significant opportunities for climbers and breakaway enthusiasts, while sprinters also have potential to shine throughout the race.
Sports Director Michal Golaś expressed the team’s strategy, stating, “This year’s route is highly demanding, but we will take advantage of our riders’ different strengths to target results on several stages. We want to approach this race as if every day were a one-day race.”
The lineup boasts notable talent, including Mohorič as a strong contender for breakaway opportunities and Bauhaus who will lead the charge in bunch sprints. Golaś hinted at the potential of Govekar if the sprint arises from a reduced group and mentioned the young Van Mechelen as someone to watch in breakaway scenarios.
Attention will also be on Buitrago, who, despite recovering from a crash during the Giro d’Italia, is expected to excel in the mountain stages. Golaś noted, “We’ll see how the first few days go and how he feels toward the end of the week,” emphasizing a cautious approach to returning from injury.
The final weekend will be crucial for chasing the overall classification, with veteran road captain Arndt ensuring the team works cohesively to support Pello Bilbao. Bilbao is eager to return to racing after a month-long hiatus, emphasized his motivation by saying, “I’m trying to enjoy every moment and create good memories,” despite facing a minor health setback.
The challenging terrain includes four summit finishes, offering viewers an intense competition for the overall standings. The opening stage (Vizille – Saint-Ismier, 146.2 km) features five categorized climbs, while Stage 2 (Saint-Martin-le-Vinoux – Le Puy-en-Velay) covers the longest distance at 237.3 km, also with five climbs.
Notably, Stage 3 will be a team time trial of 28.4 km, vital for preparing for the Tour de France, concluding with a steep ramp that could sway final timings. The following stages see a mix of flat terrain and undulating sections, ultimately leading to a decisive mountain phase that starts with Stage 6, pushing riders to their limits over challenging climbs.
The penultimate Stage 7 culminates in a taxing ascent atop Grand Colombier, while the final stage (Beaufort – Plateau de Solaison-Brison) will determine the race victor, featuring an impressive 4,000 meters of elevation gain.
As Bahrain Victorious embarks on this arduous journey, the anticipation for both thrilling races and potential standout performances is palpable. The team’s diverse strengths and strategic approach may lead them to noteworthy success in a competition that promises to be nothing short of exhilarating.
