Arensman’s Vuelta dreams shattered after stage seven crash
Thymen Arensman’s hopes of making an impact in La Vuelta came to a crashing halt during the seventh stage in Oliva. The 20-year-old rider from Team DSM suffered a fall during the frantic run-in to the finish, forcing him out of the race.
The day started off slowly for the Grenadiers, with a two-man breakaway never gaining more than a few minutes on the peloton. However, the situation took a turn for the worse when Geraint Thomas, one of the team’s key contenders, also had a crash before TV cameras started rolling. Fortunately, Thomas was able to get back on his bike and rejoin the main group.
In the final five kilometers, chaos ensued as the peloton ramped up the pace. Unfortunately, it was during this hectic sprint to the finish that Arensman found himself on the ground, requiring immediate medical attention. He has been taken to the hospital, and further updates on his condition will be provided in due course.
The incident not only affected Arensman but also caused Thomas to be delayed. Although the Welshman managed to carry on, he lost 24 seconds by the time he crossed the finish line.
It is a devastating blow for Arensman, who surely had high aspirations for the Vuelta. However, crashes and injuries are an unfortunate part of the sport, and he will need time to recover before returning to racing.
