ProTeam Lotto–Intermarché looks back on Tour Down Under with mixed, but positive feelings

# ProTeam Lotto–Intermarché Reflects on Mixed Yet Optimistic Tour Down Under

The Tour Down Under proved to be a week of highs and lows for ProTeam Lotto–Intermarché as they navigated both triumphant moments and serious challenges during their Australian campaign.

One of the most significant setbacks was the heavy crash involving team members Jonas Rutsch and Lennert Van Eetvelt during the stage to Uraidla. The course, which featured the demanding Corkscrew climb, was expected to favor Van Eetvelt, but fate took a turn. Both riders were forced to abandon the race, with Rutsch now recovering from road rash and hoping to compete in the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race next Sunday. Van Eetvelt, having returned home, is shifting his focus to upcoming goals, as his schedule did not include the next two Australian races.

Unfortunately, Taco Van der Hoorn also had to cut short his Australian experience. Despite planning to be part of the team selection, Van der Hoorn faced persistent knee pain during preparations, leading to a decision to withdraw and engage in a tailored rehabilitation program back home.

Despite these setbacks, the team’s sports director Pieter Vanspeybrouck remained upbeat about the overall experience in Australia. “A lot happened, but overall I take away a positive feeling from the Tour Down Under,” he remarked. “This was the first time many riders raced together. We travelled to Australia a week in advance, and there you could see the drive and togetherness grow day after day, reconnaissance after reconnaissance. I saw a strong group of riders who were willing to work for each other.”

The team’s efforts bore fruit with Lionel Taminiaux securing a seventh-place finish in stage 1, while Matthew Fox impressively placed eighth in stage 3. Vanspeybrouck praised Fox, stating, “What Fox, racing here in front of his home crowd, showed is very promising. He reads the race well, positions himself perfectly, and is a real team player. An eighth place in a WorldTour race for a neo-pro… that’s impressive.” Additionally, the group demonstrated resilience in the face of adversity, quickly adjusting tactics following the crash and setting new objectives. Baptiste Veistroffer’s performance in the penultimate stage, where he made it into the breakaway and held on until just two kilometers from the finish, showcased their tenacity.

Looking ahead, the team is preparing for the Surf Coast Classic on Thursday, followed by the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race on Sunday, eager to build on the lessons learned and experiences gained in Australia.

The journey continues, with hopes for stronger performances in the races to come.
