Another frustrating sprint

# Groupama-FDJ Faces Another Sprint Setback at Omloop van het Houtland

The Groupama-FDJ cycling team encountered yet another challenging day at the Omloop van het Houtland this Wednesday, as sprinter Paul Penhoët faced obstacles that hindered his performance. Despite an optimal setup leading into the final stretch, Penhoët was stuck behind a crowded field and narrowly avoided a crash just before the flamme rouge. He ultimately finished in 14th place, just behind Matt Walls, who took 12th.

The race unfolded over a completely flat 199-kilometer route from Eernegem to Lichtervelde, making a sprint finish seem all but inevitable. According to William Green, “The beginning of the race wasn’t very hard, and a small breakaway went clear.” As the team entered the local circuit, which they completed nine and a half times, the atmosphere grew tense. “There were definitely times where it was really stressful…a lot of crashes due to the very strong wind,” he added.

The initial breakaway was reined in nearly thirty kilometers from the end, and although several attacks were made during the final two laps, none managed to establish a decisive gap. Nevertheless, the Groupama-FDJ team remained vigilant in the closing kilometers.

“Our motivation remains intact,” Penhoët asserted, exhibiting resilience in the face of the day’s challenges. Green praised the team’s collective effort, stating, “We did a really strong ride as a team, especially in the final… Unfortunately, just before the critical corner at 1.1 kilometers, Paul was squeezed by two riders and dropped his chain.” Despite this, Penhoët managed to avoid a crash, but found himself at the back of the pack. The frenetic pace of the final kilometer left him unable to regain his position up front.

Reflecting on the day’s events, Penhoët expressed his frustration but remained hopeful: “It’s getting harder and harder to accept, for sure… It’s really frustrating, but I’ve been through worse.” He recounted experiencing significant challenges in his career, particularly referencing a prior injury. “I know how to get over it. It shows that my motivation remains intact and that I’m still aiming to win with the team by the end of the season.”

With the team’s spirit still high, all eyes are now on the next opportunity to convert their efforts into results.
