Alastair MacKellar Secures Back-to-Back Wins at the Australian National Championships
Alastair MacKellar has emerged victorious at the Australian National Championships, claiming both the U23 road race and time trial titles in impressive fashion. The 20-year-old cyclist from Queensland showcased his skills and determination, solidifying his status as a rising star in the cycling world.
Following his solo road race victory on Sunday, MacKellar displayed his prowess once again in the 28.6-kilometer time trial. Riding his Factor HANZŌ, the Israel – Premier Tech rider dominated the course, finishing with an impressive 1:26 margin over his closest rival to secure his second green and gold jersey.
Speaking about his success, MacKellar expressed his satisfaction with achieving his goals at the championships. He stated, “My goal here was more the time trial…I honestly didn’t come here with the intention of winning both races so to pull it off is pretty surreal. It’s what I was aiming for, and to be able to execute it on the day was perfect.“
MacKellar’s remarkable achievements provide him with a confidence boost as he looks ahead to joining Israel – Premier Tech’s training camp in Spain. Setting his sights on the upcoming season, he acknowledged the importance of balancing performance and rest, stating, “It gives me a lot of confidence coming into the season…these early races will be a bigger target now. At the same time, my other objective is to not overdo it and take some time to rest because it’s a long season and I still want to be good come the middle and end of the year.“
With the coveted green and gold jerseys adorning his shoulders for the 2023 season, MacKellar has set his sights on key objectives for the year ahead. “Some big objectives this year are the U23 races like Liège-Bastogne-Liège, which is a big goal, and hopefully, the U23 Giro again. To be able to take both Australian jerseys into these races is pretty special,” he revealed.
MacKellar’s exceptional performance at the Australian National Championships sets the stage for an exciting season ahead, as he continues to make his mark on the cycling world.
