Alastair MacKellar Claims Victory as U23 Australian Road Race Champion

The 2023 season has begun with a stunning performance by Alastair MacKellar, who took home the title of Australian U23 Road Race Champion. MacKellar, who races for Israel – Premier Tech Academy, secured his victory with a magnificent solo attack during the race in Buninyong, Victoria.

“I’ve been dreaming of that for years and to finally get to do it is so surreal,” said MacKellar. “I’ve been here for five years and been dreaming of this for five years, so to be able to do it by yourself and enjoy the last two, three hundred meters felt unreal.”

MacKellar bided his time in the peloton as a breakaway group formed ahead. He then made a bold move, bridging the gap to the leaders and quickly surpassing them with a powerful surge. No one could keep up with the 20-year-old from the Sunshine Coast, allowing him to savor his victory as he crossed the finish line with a one-minute and five-second advantage.

Reflecting on his achievement, MacKellar credited his two years with Israel – Premier Tech Academy for his growth as a cyclist.

“Being with this team has been a tremendous help to my career. Just the experience you get, the level you get from racing in Europe, you just can’t get that here,” MacKellar acknowledged. “What I’ve gained over the last two years from racing with Israel Premier Tech, it’s probably the only reason I could’ve done this today. I have one more year with them for now, I’m going to enjoy it, heading over to Europe next week, ready to kick off the season.”

With this resounding victory, Alastair MacKellar has proven his potential as a rising star in the cycling world. His remarkable performance at the U23 Australian Road Race Championship sets the stage for an exciting season ahead.
