A tough Belgian opener

# Groupama-FDJ United Faces Challenges in Omloop Nieuwsblad Opener

The Classics season has kicked off, and the peloton faced a formidable challenge at the Omloop Nieuwsblad on Saturday, marking the start of the Flemish Classic series. Groupama-FDJ United, with a reshaped squad this winter, encountered difficulties on the Belgian climbs and experienced some unfortunate incidents. Thibaud Gruel managed to finish in 28th place, crossing the line two minutes behind winner Mathieu van der Poel.

The race featured an arduous course with eight cobbled sectors and twelve “bergs,” making it slightly tougher than the previous year. The Muur-Bosberg sequence in the last fifteen kilometers was expected to be crucial, compounded by changing weather conditions that characterized the 81st edition of the Omloop Nieuwsblad. Frédéric Guesdon remarked, “There was rain at times and it wasn’t very warm… It was a tough opening race for the first outing of our young squad.” Starting with Thibaud, Bastien, and Valentin as leaders, the team worked to support them effectively.

The initial part of the race proceeded smoothly behind a five-man breakaway, but the atmosphere shifted as crashes began to increase in the final 80 kilometers. Bastien Tronchon was the first to face a minor mishap, soon followed by Valentin Madouas, who had a crash and was forced to swap bikes just 60 kilometers from the finish while the peloton intensified its engagement on the climbs.

Guesdon noted, “We expected something different.” As the race intensified, things took a turn on the Molenberg, where three riders, including Van der Poel, surged ahead of the peloton. “We know that every year the race is decided between the Eikenberg and the Molenberg, and that’s what happened,” Guesdon explained. While the team had representation behind the leaders, their fortunes soured with multiple crashes impacting team members. Valentin crashed again while trying to regain his position, and Cyril, Clément, and Johan all fell victim to incidents before reaching the Muur. Axel was also caught up in a crash, further depleting the team’s numbers.

In a significantly reduced peloton, only Thibaud Gruel remained for Groupama-FDJ United. Frédéric commented on Gruel’s challenges: “Unfortunately, he was close to bonking… On the Muur, he felt his energy fading,” which adversely affected his performance. Despite feeling good otherwise, Gruel couldn’t keep up with the group sprinting for fourth place.

At the finish in Ninove, Van der Poel secured a solo victory while Gruel managed to outpace about twenty riders to claim 28th place, two minutes off the lead. Reflecting on the day, Frédéric stated, “We expected something different today… It’s disappointing, but we must not give up. That’s cycling, and these races in Belgium bring highs and lows. We took a hit today, and we’ll use it to bounce back tomorrow and Tuesday.”

This early season setback serves as a reminder of the unpredictability of cycling, but the team remains focused on future races, ready to tackle new challenges ahead.
