Alec Segaert delivered an impressive performance for Team Bahrain Victorious, clinching the squad’s first stage win at the Giro d’Italia 2026 during Stage 12 in Novi Ligure. With a decisive attack 2km from the finish line, Segaert capitalized on a moment of hesitation among fellow competitors. Despite the challenging 175km route from Imperia to Novi Ligure—which featured significant climbs at Colle Giovo and Bric Berton—Segaert’s timing and strength proved decisive as he leveraged his time trial skills to fend off the chasing pack.
Segaert’s triumph reflects the tenacity that has characterized his season. Earlier this year, he claimed victory at the Grand Prix de Denain through a similar late-game maneuver. “It’s crazy. I always try to make plans before every stage, looking at where there could be possibilities, and today I had that chance from the team,” Segaert remarked after the race. “When things go to plan and you get rewarded with such a big win, that is what cycling is about.”
The day also saw Afonso Eulalio maintain his grip on both the Maglia Rosa and the Maglia Bianca, crucially extending his overall lead. Eulalio showcased his prowess by securing bonus seconds at the Red Bull KM, now leading the general classification ahead of Jonas Vingegaard by 33 seconds. Reflecting on the day, he noted, “Today was a perfect day. We kept the jersey and we won the stage with Alec, which is amazing.”
The tactical acumen of the Bahrain Victorious team was also highlighted by director Franco Pellizotti, who explained: “It was something we planned this morning… In the end, we were also a bit lucky, because the other teams worked very hard on the climbs and that made the group smaller.” Pellizotti praised Segaert’s decisive move: “He chose the right moment, went full gas, and it became very hard to bring him back.”
