Vingegaard nears Giro d’Italia leader following time trial
# Vingegaard Rises in Giro d’Italia Standings After Time Trial Performance
Following the second rest day of the Giro d’Italia, riders geared up for a challenging 42-kilometer individual time trial from Viareggio to Massa, held on a flat course. Early in the race, top favorite Filippo Ganna set a daunting benchmark time that no rider could surpass.
Jonas Vingegaard, starting second-to-last, was keenly aware of the task ahead, trailing race leader Afonso Eulálio by 2 minutes and 24 seconds before the time trial commenced. As the race progressed, the focus shifted to the general classification contenders, with Vingegaard aiming to close the gap.
At the first two intermediate checkpoints, Vingegaard clocked the eleventh-fastest time and ultimately finished with a time that was three minutes slower than Ganna’s. However, in the overall classification, Vingegaard made significant strides, reducing his deficit to Eulálio to just 27 seconds. Thymen Arensman, currently in third place, trails Vingegaard by one and a half minutes.
Reflecting on his performance, Vingegaard commented, “Actually, I felt pretty good today, but this clearly wasn’t my best time trial. Looking back, I have to be satisfied with this result and with my position in the general classification. I’m in a good spot considering everything that’s still to come in this Giro.”
