Eulálio Rides into Maglia Rosa

# Afonso Eulálio Claims Maglia Rosa in Dramatic Stage 5 of Giro d’Italia

In an electrifying display of endurance and tenacity, Afonso Eulálio stormed to the forefront of the Giro d’Italia by seizing the Maglia Rosa following an impressive second-place finish on Stage 5. The 203km route stretched from Praia a Mare to Potenza, featuring grueling climbs and relentless wet conditions that tested the mettle of all competitors.

Igor Arrieta from UAE Team Emirates-XRG clinched the stage victory, finishing just two seconds ahead of Eulálio, while Guillermo Thomas Silva from Astana Qazaqstan Team secured third place. The stage involved substantial challenges, including the steep Montagna Grande di Viggiano climb that marked the day’s narrative.

With 185km still remaining in the stage, the breakaway began to take shape, catching the attention of Eulálio, who quickly maneuvered to be part of the leading group. Throughout the day, he demonstrated resilience, maintaining his position and supporting the dwindling breakaway amidst the challenging climbs and inclement weather.

In a twist during the final kilometers, drama unfolded as Arrieta crashed while leading, shortly followed by Eulálio, who had to change bikes. Swift action from his team allowed him to rejoin the race, and he was momentarily alone at the front but ultimately had to battle his way back through the pack to contest the final sprint.

Post-race, Eulálio reflected on his day: “I don’t really know how I feel. It was a crazy day. With around 50km to go, on the steep climb, I went all in with Arrieta for the victory. From there, the race became super crazy… Of course, I wanted the stage win, but I am super happy with the pink jersey.”

He shared his hopes of winning additional stages to secure a longer contract with his team, stating: “Damiano told me that if I win two stages, he will sign one more year. I was thinking, ‘if I win today, I only need to win one more.’”

Eulálio’s victory not only propelled him into the overall lead but also top position in the young rider classification, earning himself the Maglia Bianca. Sports Director Franco Pellizotti praised Eulálio’s efforts, remarking, “Maybe the stage win together with the pink jersey would have been the cherry on the cake, but he was really strong today.”

Tomorrow, Eulálio will don the prestigious pink jersey as he embarks on the next stage from Paestum to Napoli, marking a significant milestone in his cycling career. As he enters this new chapter of the competition, he hopes to inspire not just his team but also fans across Portugal who are rallying behind him.
